CECIL THOMAS CRIME PLATFORM 2007
|
I will build upon the work I have been successfully doing, which includes:
- My Cincinnati Initiative to Reduce Violence (CIRV), in conjunction with Professor David Kennedy
- Continue to foster strong relationships between City Council and the police
- Continue to foster strong relationships between citizens and the police
- Continue to serve on the Hamilton County Criminal Justice Commission
- Foster a greater collaboration among all law enforcement entities in the region
- Continue to support Police Visibility Overtime (PVO) as an additional crime-fighting tool for Cincinnati Police
- Continue to support the Cincinnati Youth Streetworker Program modeled after the Boston project
- Continue to strengthen laws in our municipal code as they relate to crime
As a former law enforcement officer who understands the complexity of safety, I strongly support the comprehensive safety plan put forth by the County Commissioners. Understanding the critical need for alternatives to incarceration for our mentally ill and low-level offenders, and also recognizing the extreme voter sensitivity, I am open to finding a middle ground or less costly solution. However, the need for a new facility is real. If we are to build, then we must include the rehabilitative services piece to reduce recidivism or we will only revisit this issue of jail overcrowding in the very near future.
- Economic Development - Create jobs, reduce crime and build stronger families
- Housing - New and existing housing in the central core and neighborhoods to encourage
more people to move into the city
- Environment - A clean and safe environment provides a better quality of life
